Asif Shaikh Elected President of Society for International Development, Washington Chapter
The Washington Chapter of the Society for International Development (SIDW) announced the election of its new president, Asif Shaikh, President and CEO of International Resources Group (IRG). Founded in 1957, SID is an international association of individuals and organizations concerned with sustainable economic, social and political development. SID has over 3,000 members in 125 countries and over 65 local chapters worldwide, including in Washington , DC .
Alina Zyszkowski, Executive Director of the Washington chapter, said: "We are thrilled to have such a thoughtful and knowledgeable member of the international community to lead SIDW during this dynamic and challenging period in international development."
Asif Shaikh has been a member of the board of the Washington chapter since 2003. He said : "It is an honor to serve this exceptional organization. SID provides a forum for development professionals who are seeking long-term solutions to issues such as hunger, disease, and injustice. My colleagues and I in the Washington chapter are committed to broadening the dialogue on crucial international development issues
and promoting effective economic growth for people throughout the world."
Mr. Shaikh succeeds Jack Downey, Chief Operating Officer of the Academy for Educational Development, who served as President of SIDW from 2001-2004. SID's International Secretariat is in Rome , Italy and the President of SID International is Enrique Iglesias, President of the Inter-American Development Bank. SID's Washington chapter is one of the largest chapters worldwide.
Other officers of SIDW for 2004 include Betsy Bassan, Senior Vice President-International Health Group, Chemonics International; Janet Ballantyne, Group Vice President-International, Abt Associates, Inc.; Werner Kiene, Representative to The Bretton Woods Institutions, UN World Food Programme; and Nicole Jensen, Controller, PADCO Inc.
Mr. Shaikh is a widely recognized authority on the links between economics, governance, and rural production systems, as well as on environmental policy and poverty alleviation. A frequent lecturer at universities and international forums on the development challenges of societies in transition, he has experience in more than
35 countries worldwide.
