Jerry Schubel Joins IRG Board of Directors

Washington-International Resources Group (IRG) announced today that Jerry Schubel has been elected to its board of directors. "We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Jerry," said IRG Chairman Dr. Philip Palmedo. "His unique, impressive experience in environmental affairs will be a great asset for us and for our clients."

A visiting professor of biology and environmental studies and director of the Alternative Futures Forum at Washington College, Dr. Schubel was president and CEO of the New England Aquarium in Boston from 1994 to 2001 and now holds the title of president emeritus. On June 15, 2002, he will become the president and CEO of the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California. He is an accomplished and respected administrator and scientist, serving as dean and director of the State University of New York at Stony Brook's Marine Sciences Research Center from 1974 to 1994.

"Jerry has done an enviable mix of academic and field work. That's given him a distinctive perspective on environmental issues," said IRG President and CEO Asif Shaikh. "He will contribute enormously to our work."

Dr. Schubel has written extensively for both academic journals and general audiences. He has published 200 scientific papers and acted as writer, editor, or photographer for several books, including The Life and Death of the Chesapeake Bay , Garbage & Trash: Can We Convert the Mountains into Molehills?, The Great South Bay, and The Living Chesapeake . He was a co-founder of the Long Island Environmental-Economic Forum, a member of NASA's National Oceanic Satellite System Science Working Group, Chairman of the New York Sea Grant Institute Governing Board, Chairman of the National Research Council's Marine Board, an instructor at the National Institute of Oceanography in Pakistan, a member of the U.S. delegation to the Western Pacific Advisory Committee, and an honorary professor of East China University in Shanghai.
