IRG's Matthew Mendis Elected to Global Village Energy Partnership Board
Washington, DC - September 22, 2005 - International Resources Group (IRG) today announced that Matthew Mendis, its Corporate Vice President responsible for energy and environmental management, has been elected to the Global Village Energy Partnership (GVEP) Board.
Mendis will join in providing program vision, leadership and guidance for this international partnership network whose objective is to increase access to energy in poverty-stricken rural areas around the globe.
"IRG is honored that one of its internationally-recognized energy experts has been chosen to help contribute to this important and prestigious organization's success," said IRG President and CEO Asif Shaikh. "Matthew has dedicated his career to addressing energy, environmental and poverty issues in developing countries. He will contribute significantly to GVEP's strategic planning and success."

At IRG, Mendis develops innovative solutions to address complex financial, social, political and institutional barriers to increasing clean and affordable energy access, in order to reduce poverty. Mendis previously worked with the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program and founded Alternative Energy Development, Inc. which subsequently merged with IRG. Trained as an engineer and an economist, he has worked in over 50 developing countries and is the author of numerous publications on rural and renewable energy.
GVEP is a partnership of over 700 international and national, private and public sector organizations committed to increasing access to modern energy services in impoverished rural areas around the world. GVEP's partners include the World Bank, the US Agency for International Development, foreign governments and energy and equipment companies. The partnership was established in 2000, as a means of accelerating rural development and alleviating poverty. Its Technical Secretariat is based in Rugby, England.
